Topeka Westminster Celebrates 100 Years!

Topeka Westminster at 1275 SW Boswell Avenue was designed by architect Charles Cuthbert while serving as the Kansas State Architect. As designer of other notable structures in the area such as Carnegie Library at Washburn University, Budig Hall (formerly Hock Auditorium) and Snow Hall at the University of Kansas, Cuthbert designed Westminster to complement the style of many structures on the Washburn campus.

Westminster’s association with famous Kansans is a point of interest. Dr. Karl Menniger was a Westminster member for nearly 25 years. Two of his children were baptized at the church. The Rev. Charles Sheldon, author of “In His Steps” and the popular “WWJD” (What Would Jesus Do) has preached here.

Fellowship Hall, located on the lowest level of the building, has served as a truly multi-purpose facility. It has been the site for elaborate banquets, informal potluck meals, Vacation Bible School, musical events, pickleball, and basketball games. Fellowship Hall has allowed Westminster to reach beyond its doors to serve the entire community. During the historic flood of 1951, Westminster joined forces with the Red Cross to house and feed as many as 80 people in Fellowship Hall. Former Topekan, and North Carolina Coach Dean Smith used to practice basketball here!  Currently, church and community volunteers cook and serve as many as 1300 meals for the children’s summer lunch program. The Fellowship Hall also hosts Meals on Mondays (MOMS).

We are delighted to invite you to Topeka Westminster's year-long celebration of the 100 years of our church at 1275 Boswell Ave.  Your presence would be an honor as we commemorate this special occasion with members of our community and distinguished guests. Please join us as we mark this memorable event and celebrate together.
